A peaceful village overlooking the Tavignano Valley in central Corsica, the charming hamlet of Venaco shines as a postcard-perfect gem of tranquillity amid an island of ever-growing tourism and commercial resort towns.
Come here for a retreat from the bustle of city life; you will find a local tavern, market, and restaurant within 500 metres of your apartment, and the town of Corte sits 10km away. There, you will find the unmistakeable Citadel, built in 1419 and perched atop the town overlooking the rivers below, in addition to several small museums and other local attractions.
A half-hour drive south-east will take you to Aleria, the closest beach and the site of some fascinating Roman ruins. In its unpolluted waters you can fish and swim to your heart’s content. Aleria too, remains unaffected by the trappings of modern tourism and retains its pristine beauty as a charming, natural glimpse into traditional Corsican village life. An hour’s drive north-west will take you to the beautiful sands of L’Ile Rousse, definitely worth a day trip.
